 The Paulwick Pirate (Part 3)

Two days pass on the open ocean. As Captain Flint walks on the deck he sees Leona drunkenly walking around with a flask of rum in her hand, giving petty orders to the crew. He walks over to confront her about this.

“Miss Leona, this is the fourth time I have seen you drinking on deck!” He says to her sternly.

“Aye Captain, you see, it’s awful boring at sea. The rum makes things more enjoyable, makes the time pass faster,” she says, slurring most of her words.

“Miss Leona I am aware you are a pirate, but on this mission you are also the First Mate on a ship for the Royal Navy, and therefore you must set a precedent for the rest of the crew,” he pleads, trying to make her understand.

“Well maybe my precedent is that everyone should loosen up, have some rum, and maybe this voyage would be a little more fun!” she says, downing another gulp.

Flint quickly grabs her wrist, “I will not have a drunk crew stupidly walking around and managing my ship, is that understood?” he says, his face very close to her own.

Leona leans next to Flint’s ear and quietly responds, “Yes Captain.”

Flint releases his grip on her wrist and she puts the flask away. “Go sober up, I expect you to be in tip top shape by tomorrow.”

“Alright Captain,” she says pouting her lips.

The rest of the crew, who had stopped to watch the heated conversation, quickly turn back to their work as the Captain turns his attention away from Leona.

The next morning comes and everyone is woken by a very pleasing noise, “LAND HO!” The crew rush to the deck to see the beautiful sight. They are greeted by Captain Flint and a now mostly sober Leona, who casually walk up behind the crew.

“Is that our island Captain?” Leona asks.

“Yes it is,” he replies with an excited smile.

“Shall I have the helmsman set a course for the island?” Leona asks, trying to be more professional.

Flint smiles, taking notice of her effort and proud of her for it responds, “Right away Miss Leona.”

“Helmsman, set a course for the south beach of the island. Get us as close as you can and we will take the rowboats the rest of the way,” Leona says, enjoying her position of power.

“Aye Ma’am,” responds the helmsman.
