 Starlight Orbs (Part 3)

Walking through the dark woods, Lyla was so overcome by fear. Her feet moved for her, not knowing what else to do. Trying to find the little ball of light, or any light at all, was her only goal. She kept her gaze straight ahead of her, scared of what she might see in the forest.

Her eyes welled with tears. As she wiped them away, a small light shone into them. The light was so close. Lyla dashed towards the light, hoping she had found what she was looking for. As she approached it, the light grew brighter and brighter. When she stood above it, it was such a beautiful light. A soft gray, with shimmers flowing through it. Lyla’s jaw dropped, all her fear was gone as she admired the starlight orb.

Snapping out of her amazement, she picked up the orb, it was weightless and was neither warm nor cold. If her eyes were not looking right at it, she would not believe it existed. Lyla tried her best to be delicate with the orb, not wanting to break it, wanting to bring it and show it to her mother. But the fact remained, Lyla was still lost, and did not know the way back home. She turned around and started to walk back the way she came, using the orb like a flashlight.

After walking for nearly an hour, none of the trees looked familiar to Lyla, she had no clue where she was. Breaking into tears once again, she fell to the ground. Seated on the dirt she cried. She held the starlight orb tight, hugging it for comfort as if it were a teddy bear. The action of her hug caused the orb to crack, break apart, and dissolve into nothingness.

Her sadness only deepened at the loss of her light. The light of the orb was soon replaced by many small lights, coming from all around. She looked up to see people with flashlights coming quickly towards her.

One of the women dropped her flashlight and dashed to Lyla, it was her mother. Her mother quickly scooped Lyla into her arms and held her tight, tears of relief streaming down her face.

Lyla’s original wish had been granted, her simple, innocent wish. Lyla always loved being outdoors at night but her mother always insisted on staying inside, saying it was too cold. But now her wish had come true, Lyla’s mother had come to join her outside. Everynight after that, when Lyla would gaze at the stars, she always had her mother sitting right next to her, holding her tight, never letting go.
