7/10/22 Escape (Part 1)

 Escape (Part 1)

“I need to get out of here,” she hurriedly whispered to herself, grabbing her leather bag and pulling tight its black strings. She ran out of her cozy cottage on the edge of the lake and ran for the woods behind her home.

Pausing her run for a moment she turned around and looked at her cottage, “Goodbye,” she said to the only place she had ever known as home. She continued running through the woods as fast as she could, never looking back, only ahead.

Her legs become weak with the constant stress. She stops and catches her breath, trying to keep her breathing as silent as possible. ‘Please don’t find me, please don’t catch me’ she thinks to herself. She sits down against a tree trunk, relaxing her body and preparing for the next stretch of her escape.

Having rested long enough, and not wanting to risk being caught, she stands up and begins her quick running pace once again. She wanted to be safe, get as much distance as she could before her body needed sleep.

Still scared of the possible threat behind her, she runs through the forest, barely missing trees and roots, only focused on getting away. During her clumsy run, she comprehends just enough to not hit every tree in sight, but manages to run into a man as he crosses her path. She topples over the man as the two tumble to the ground.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you coming, are you alright?” he asks, quickly rushing over to where she had rolled.

“Uhm yeah, I’m fine…I mean, I’m not hur- you didn’t hurt me,” she stutters out. Her hands begin to shake, she scrambles to stand up and continue her run but the man clearly sees her distress.

“Were you running from something?” the man asks, scanning the forest behind her for any approaching danger.

“Yes and I am going to continue running if you don’t mind,” she spurts out quickly.

The man looks the woman over and sees how tired and worn out she is. The dark circles in her eyes, the constant heavy breathing, his conscience demands that he help her. “If you need a place to hide, my home is not far from here, I can keep you safe from whatever is chasing you.”

The woman quickly ponders the offer. ‘Would I really be safe with him? Can he really protect me?’ she thinks. In this pause, she starts to feel the toll her constant running has taken on her body. Her eyes suddenly feel like stone and her body wishes to collapse.

“I would like that, if it is not too much of a burden to you of course.”

“Not at all, I wouldn’t have offered if it was,” the man says, giving her a warm smile which the woman copied in return. “My names Len by the way.”

“Ora,” she replied, as he began to lead her to his home.
