 Escape (Part 5)

As she ran through the woods, Ora could hear the faint footsteps of Len following close behind. She turned her head behind her, “Just go home Len!”

“NO!,” he shouted back, “I said I’d keep you safe and I will!”

Ora turned her head forwards again and quietly whispered to herself, “Nowhere is safe anymore.”

She continued her run and Len continued his chase. After an hour their legs were both numb, they grew tired, but Ora would not stop running, and Len would not give up his pursuit. He continued to push on, driven by his honor and sense of responsibility for Ora. He knew she was not ok and needed help, his plan was to wait til she got so tired and had to stop running, then he could maybe talk some sense into her. It was hard to push on, with Ora driven by her fear, Len grew afraid that his body would fail him before he could help her.

Suddenly Ora stopped her running and stood completely still. Len silently rejoiced, assuming his moment had come to finally help Ora. He watched her for a moment, waiting for her to drop to the ground in exhaustion. She did not. Ora stood and began looking upwards.

In her eye a giant shadow was standing in front of her, too large to run around. She was frozen in fear, the mere sight of the shadow was enough to petrify Ora.

A deep gravelly voice came from the shadow, “You cannot run from me, there is no escape.”

“Ora?” Len called out.

“Can’t run…no escape,” Ora whispered.

“Now you are mine,” the deep voice spoke once again. The shadow quickly swept over Ora, completely encompassing her statue-like body. Ora screamed and then fell to the ground.

“ORA!” Len yelled as he ran to her. He quickly dropped to his knees and shook her body, “Ora? Ora, wake up!” He placed his fingers on her neck, there was no pulse, she was gone. “I’m sorry Ora,” Len said solemnly, tears escaping from his eyes.

Not wanting to just leave her body lying out in the woods, he spent the rest of the morning digging her grave. As the sun rose above the horizon, he gently lowered her body into the shallow grave and then filled it back up with dirt. Taking to sticks, he formed a makeshift cross and stuck it in the ground at the head of her grave.

“May the noises in your head frighten you no longer Ora.” While the sun continued to rise in the sky, Len silently made the long walk home, back to his cottage. “Rest well Ora, rest well.”
