9/7/22 Cascada (Part 4)

 Cascada (Part 4)

After running through alley after alley, taking any turn she could as quickly as possible, Cascada no longer heard the pursuing footsteps of the two policemen. She stopped to catch her breath, and in doing so let the full reality of her situation set it. ‘Where am I?’ she thought to herself.

The only thing she could think to do now was explore. Maybe somewhere somehow, she would find a way to get back to her home planet. Where she was, the roads were fairly empty, only a few cars passing by now and then.

As she walked through the empty part of the city, she finally came upon another person. A woman walking directly towards her. Cascada could see the woman staring her down, confused by her looks.

“Uhm excuse me, what is the name of this city?” Cascada asks, politely stopping the woman.

“Why are you lost?” the woman says with a small laugh behind her words.

“Yes, I am, and I’m not sure how to get home,” Cascada replies solemnly.

“Well what city do you live in, I might be able to help you out,” the woman offers.

A hint of nervousness pulls at Cascada, not sure how to answer the woman’s question, “Oh it’s… not around here.”

“Well then what are you doing here?” the woman asks, puzzled.

“I’m not sure, I woke up in a field not too far from this city and I have no idea how I got there.”

“Oh,” is all the woman replies, as a medley of bad scenarios play through her head, “Well if you need a place to stay for a while, I have a spare room.”

“That would be nice, thank you.”

“Come with me, the bus stop is just a few blocks down.” Cascada nods and walks with the woman, not exactly sure what was going on or where they were going. After a short stroll they arrive at the bus stop and sit on the cold metal bench. “The bus will be here in about ten minutes,” the woman assures Cascada.

‘Finally, a decent being of this strange world,’ Cascada thinks as she smiles at the woman.

The woman turns to Cascada, “My name's Laura by the way.”

“I’m Cascada.”

“Never heard that one before. It’s pretty.”

“Thank you, it’s quite common where I come from.”

“Oh? And where’s that?” Laura asks curiously.

Cascada immediately regrets her words, “Ummm… it’s a long story.”

“Well you’ll have to tell it to me when we get to my place.” Cascada remains silent.

The awkward tension is broken as the bus pulls up. Cascada follows Laura in and onto the interestingly patterned seats.
