Breaking the Cage (Part 6)
The long drive brought them to a large field of corn. “Planning on doing some farming before we get there?” Hilton asks, trying to lighten the mood.
“Trust me, I know where I’m going,” Morris says unamused by the joke, “You didn’t think they would put the cage right out in the open did you?”
“No,” Hilton stares at the ground, “I guess not.”
The car approaches an open patch of the field, “Alright Hilton, head down. I’ll get out first and start talking to the guard, get out quietly and once the code is in you need to knock him out fast alright?”
“Can do.”
“And he won’t remember any of this right, after you knock him out? I don’t want the controllers coming after me if this plan of yours fails.”
“It won’t fail Morris…It can’t.” Hilton ducks his head down as Morris pulls into the clearing. From his cramped space below, he looks up and sees the large structure before him. Four steel poles sticking straight out of the ground leading up to the People Cage facility. High in the sky, almost touching the clouds sits the cage, supported by two buildings on either side. He can just barely make out the chains of the cage. Flashbacks strike, person after person falling to their death, and nothing he could do about it. But now he could, now he could end it all.
Morris exits the car and casually walks up to the guard. “Hey Mr. Bentwell, what are you doing here in between tournaments?”
“Hey Zac, I think I left something in my office up there, I have been looking around my house for it nonstop and can’t seem to find it.”
The guard looks over to the car, “What happened to your car?”
“Got in an accident and this is what they had to loan me.” The guard is skeptical for a moment but Morris holds his face well. “Soooo are you gonna let me in?”
“Of course Mr. Bentwell.” The guard turns to the elevator and starts entering the code. As soon as his back is to the car, Hilton quietly gets out, baseball bat in hand and sneaks up behind the guard.
A small beeping comes from the console by the door, “There you go Mr. Bentwell.”
“Thank you Zac,” Morris says as Hilton comes up behind the guard, giving a swift and strong blow to the back of his head.
The guard falls face first to the ground, “Yeah, thanks Zac.” Hilton turns to Morris, “Alright, get out of here, I’m bound to set off some kind of alarm while I’m in there so you need to get far away. And get that message out for me will you?”
“I will Hilton, I promise.” Morris runs back to the car as Hilton hops in the elevator. “Godspeed Hilton,” Morris murmurs to himself, taking one last look at the cage.
