Breaking the Cage (Part 3)
Hilton is quickly escorted out of the cage through a hatch in the concrete ceiling and taken back out through the waiting room. As he passes by the controllers room, he stares at the door, imagining the document hiding behind it hung on the wall before entering an elevator.
As they reach the ground, a dark sack is thrown over Hilton’s head. While being driven away, Hilton tries his best to feel which way the turns are and the distance between each turn, but it is impossible. With so little sleep and the amount of adrenaline running through his body, intense focus was not an option.
After hours, the car arrives and Hilton is pulled out. The sack is removed and he finds himself in front of his house. Before he can even turn around the car drives away. It was a strange feeling being home. Although he wasn’t gone for long, it felt like he had been in the cage for years. His comfy home no longer felt right to be in, like it was too luxurious for a guy like him.
Slowly he walked to his door and turned the handle of his unlocked home. He wandered inside, looking around as if it were the first time he had ever stepped foot in the house. He managed to make it to his kitchen table where he sat down, his head immediately falling into his hands. For hours he sat there, holding his face and breathing, trying to process everything that had happened on the last day.
“I need to destroy that document,” he said with a final deep breath. “But how? I don’t even know where the cage is! Calm down, calm down,” he says to himself. “I need someone on the inside to help me, but who?”
Getting up from his perch in the kitchen he walks to the living room and sits in front of his TV. Turning it on, the first thing that pops up is the People Cage, Tournament 500. For a reason unknown even to him, he watches it.
Seeing all the people who were alive just a day ago, just hours ago, seeing himself being somewhat happy, then watching it all change was horrifying, but not all for loss. As the tournament went on he noticed a change. He could tell that Morris had some sympathy for the contestants, sympathy he desperately tried to hide.
“I need to find Morris Bentwell,” Hilton said out loud, “He might be my only hope of ending the People Cage.”
