 Longing for Freedom (Part 4)

Jorn stays silent as Reman walks right next to him, but doesn’t seem to notice him. Reman leaves with huff, sure that Jorn had gone down that alley, but not able to find him. Jorn loudly releases his breath.

“That was close,” the woman says to him.

“Thank you,” Jorn says, turning to face the woman who has suddenly appeared behind him.

“So why were you running from that guy?” the woman asks casually.

“He is my slavemaster.”

The woman’s face drops, “Oh…Was that Reman?”

“Yes,” Jorn replies confused, “Do you know him?”

“No but I’ve heard of him. His slave trade has ruined this city,” she says with a ferocity in her eyes.

Jorn lifts an eyebrow, “How?”

“Nuro used to be a great city, with a booming population of reputable people. But the Baron has whored us out to Reman, using Nuro as a place for Reman to auction his slaves. That’s what Nuro is known for now. We are called the city of slaves. If our old Baron, rest his soul, were still alive, he would never have let this kind of trade happen here. His son however cares not for the reputation of Nuro.”

“I had no idea the effect he had on your city,” Jorn says softly, “I’ve never been here before.”

“Why did Reman bring you here?” the woman softens her tone, “Was he going to sell you here?”

“No. Once a month when it is time for him to collect his earnings, Reman travels to Nuro and always brings a slave with him. I’ve heard from the others that they usually do nothing when they are here.”

“He is using you like ornaments, marketing his auction to the scum that have taken over the population of the city.”

The conversation dies as Jorn has no clue how to respond. “I’m Jorn by the way,” he says after a few moments of silence.

“Alania.”

“Are you a witch? You know because of the magic.”

“Yes I am,” Alania says with a smile, “Although I prefer sorceress.”

“Well I suppose I should thank you. If it weren’t for your magic I’d probably be dead right now, so thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”
