Longing for Freedom (Part 5)
“Wow, I don’t really know where to go from here. I’ve been a slave for so long, I don’t really remember what it’s like to be free,” Jorn says with nervous breaths.
Alania thinks for a moment before an idea pops in her head, “I know a place, follow me.” Alania quickly walks out of the alley, not even waiting for Jorn to respond.
Jorn scrambles to his feet, trying to catch up to Alania before she goes out of view. As he walks trying to match her pace, he looks around the city, not wanting Reman or a guard to notice him. Alania however walks without a care in the world, seemingly not worried about Jorn whatsoever.
“Alania, could you slow down? You might know where we are going but I don’t,” Jorn whisper yells, not wanting to draw attention in the crowd. Alania ignores his request and keeps walking at a brisk pace.
Their small journey across the city ends at a tower, across a small bridge over a canal. Just as Jorn steps foot on the other side of the bridge, Alania vanishes into thin air.
“Alania?” Jorn says quietly, “Alania?” he asks again but louder. He looks around but does not see the sorceress anywhere. Turning back to the tower he notices the front door is slightly open. Figuring this must be the place Alania was talking about, Jorn walks to the door and gently pushes it open.
Inside the tall stone tower is a spiral staircase made of black metal. “Alania,” he calls again, thinking she must be at the top. Still receiving no reply, he climbs the stairs, looking up the tall tower as he goes. At the top of the staircase is another door, this one closed, but not locked. Jorn enters the room and finds it empty, with nothing but a mirror inside.
“Hello,” Alania says from behind him.
“Woah! When did you get here? Why did you leave me?”
“Because you need to learn to do things on your own.”
“Why because I was a slave?”
“Yes, and because you still are. You have to embrace freedom, don’t let others tell you what to do. Make your own path, if you want something take it, go for it!” Alania encourages him.
Jorn takes a deep breath, processing her advice, “You’re right,” he pauses. “Thank you for your help Alania, but I think it’s time for me to go. I have a new life to build, on my own.”
Alania smiles, “I think you are right. Good luck Jorn.”
Jorn returns the smile before leaving the tower. Immediately he goes for the city gates, ready to go into the world and learn life for himself. Just outside the gates of Nuro, Jorn stares at the vast open fields. Jorn smiles, “I am free.”
