1/7/22 The Plane
The Plane
A man sits at a park bench, admiring the warm colored leaves swaying back and forth with the tree in the autumn breeze. Above him a plane passes over, roaring it’s engines to the people below. ‘Can they see me?’ he thinks to himself as he watches the plane pass overhead.
Moments after the thought enters his mind the plane is gone; not just gone but completely disappeared, like it disintegrated into thin air. The man stands up in shock and looks all around the sky, the plane nowhere in sight. He looks to the other park goers, wondering why they aren't reacting like he is. ‘Did I even see a plane?’ the man begins questioning himself, ‘Was it even really there?’
The man walks over to another man, sitting on a bench not far from his, casually reading a newspaper, “Excuse me sir, did you see or hear a plane that just flew by?” he says in the calmest voice he can muster.
Startled and confused, the man looks up from his newspaper, “Umm I might have heard a plane I’m not sure to be honest, wasn’t really paying attention you know,” he says slightly lifting the newspaper as he nods.
“Oh alright, thank you.” The man spots a child playing nearby his mother, ‘Kid’s love passing planes, he must have seen it,’ he thinks hopefully. He approaches the mother, “Excuse me ma’am, did you or your son see a plane pass by just now?”
The mother, a bit creeped out by the interaction, slowly responds, “Ummm no?”
“Are you sure, your son didn’t stop to look at something in the sky? He didn’t say anything?” the man asks desperately. Without responding the woman grabs her child by the arm and walks away to another part of the park.
“No, NO! I saw a plane, I'm sure of it. I’m not crazy!” the man whisper yells to himself. Passersby in the park give the man strange looks as he mentally unwinds in the middle of the path. The man looks to the sky and yells, “WHERE DID YOU GO? I SAW YOU, NOW WHERE ARE YOU.” Tears begin forming in his eyes from his rage.
The man locks eyes with a woman standing nearby, she stares at him, unfazed by his actions. ‘She must know something,’ he reasons to himself. He begins to charge the woman, “WHERE DID THE PLANE GO?”
Before he is able to lay a hand on the woman, she pulls out a needle and jabs him in the leg. She slowly lowers him to the ground affectionately shushing him, “Don’t worry, everything will be ok. We will try going in public again next week.” The man’s eyes close completely as the woman carries him away.
