 Shadows

Driving down the road late at night, you see a shadow in the corner of your eye. Turning swiftly to take a closer look, you realize it’s gone.

“Just a trick of the eyes, nothing to worry about,” you say to yourself. Calming your nerves once again you continue driving. A few streets down and a car pulls out in front of you, its dark color hard to see. With no tail lights, you squint your eyes, trying your best to keep a good distance away.

A large hill approaches and you push the gas a little harder. You watch as the car ahead of you dips over the peak of the hill. As you drive over, expecting to see the black car rolling down the hill, it too is gone. Quickly looking left and right you see no place where the car could have turned.

Panic settles in, “Where did that car go?” Rationalizations fly through your brain. “It probably just sped up and turned farther down,” you say with little confidence, knowing you didn’t hear the roar of an engine.

Continuing on your drive, flustered by the disappearing shadows, you press the gas a little harder, desperate to get home. In the forest on either side of the road shadows begin moving. Already freaking out, you try your best to ignore them. Deep breaths leave your lungs, “Focus on the road, just get home, it will be ok, it’s just plants right?” your grip tightens on the wheel.

Pulling up to a stop sign you see a man leaning on the sign post, or is it a woman? “Is that a person?” you say your thoughts out loud. The shadowy figure doesn’t move, frozen in it’s slouched position.

Fear turns to bravery and you hop out of your car. “WHAT ARE YOU!?” The shadow slowly twists its head towards you. It’s soulless face drills into you. Now you are the one stood frozen. Suddenly the shadow dissipates into nothingness.

You shakily run back to your car and start it up faster than ever before. “I’m going home and going to bed! We are going to pretend this never happened and hope it never does again,” you say as you slam the gas pedal to the floor.
