2/15/22 Deposit

 Deposit

“Please make your deposit here,” a robotic voice blasts from the metal box. A man drops his card in and continues walking. “Please make your deposit here,” the voice says again. Another man does the same and the man before, and is then followed by a woman.

A long line of people all walk past the box and drop in their cards into the metal collection box. The orderly routine is disrupted by a woman, in a long brown coat, frantically looking for her slip of paper.

“Please make your deposit here,” the voice says to her. All eyes are on the woman as she searches through her purse and pockets, even turning to look at the ground.

“Oh no, oh no, where is it?” she breathily mumbles to herself. Having looked everywhere panic truly sets in, “OH NO,” she stands frozen. Two security guards grab the woman and drag her away screaming. “I HAD IT, I SWEAR I DID, PLEASE NO, I’LL FIND IT!” Her screams are shut off by a large door closing behind the woman.

The silence of the line is broken by the robotic voice, “Please make your deposit here.” The next person in line slowly drops his card in the metal box and walks on. Everyone follows suit as they try to ignore what just happened. Eventually the small chatter returns and the poor woman has been forgotten.

As the line continues moving forward, a new crowd has reached the box, completely unaware of what had taken place. “Please make your deposit here,” continues the monotonous robotic voice.
