The Paulwick Pirate (Part 8)
In a quiet alley Leona assembles the 20 or so men. “What’s going on Miss Leona?” a crewmate asks worriedly.
“Captain Flint has been arrested and locked up because he was right, there was no gold in the first place and it was all a setup,” she says, utterly disgusted with the King.
“Are we going to be arrested too?” another man asks.
“I don’t know but it is very likely. What I do know is we need to save our Captain. He doesn’t deserve to be locked up.”
“So what’s the plan Miss Leona?” asks another one of the men.
Leona lowers her voice. “At sunset, I will go to the prison and ask to visit with Captain Flint. I will likely be denied so I will need you to cause a distraction. Gather outside the prison and start demanding Flint be released, cause ruckus, start a riot, whatever. While the guards are distracted with you all, I will swipe a key and go rescue Flint. You will likely be chased by the guards so I want you to scatter and then meet back here, make sure you aren’t followed. Once everyone is back here, including the Captain, we will figure out what to do from there,” Leona looks at all the men, “You all got that?”
“Aye ma’am,” they all say quietly.
The sun dips below the horizon. It is time. Leona walks up to the front gates of the prison as a tall guard approaches her. “Please state your business miss,” he says bluntly.
“I’d like to visit with Captain Flint Zelly,” Leona says calmly.
“What is your relation to him?” the guard continues in the same dull tone.
“I’m his First Mate and I need to know what my orders are now that he’s locked up and all that.”
“Captain Zelly is not to have any visitors, per the Ki-” the guard is cut off by the loud shouting of the crew.
“FREE OUR CAPTAIN!” “YOU DIRTY RATS!” “LET HIM GO, HE COMMITTED NO CRIME!” they shout.
The guard looks to Leona, “Excuse me one moment ma’am,” he says and he and the other guard at the gate walk towards the riot.
Leona swiftly grabs the keys off the guard’s belt as he walks past her, too distracted by the men to notice. She quickly opens the gate and slips in. Walking through hallway after hallway, softly calling Flint’s name, she finally hears a loud whisper, “Leona? Is that you?”
Leona turns the corner and finds Flint in his cell. She quickly goes to the lock and slides the key in. “Are you crazy! What are you doing? How did you get in here?” Flint says in shock.
“That doesn’t matter right now, come on,” Leona says as she gently opens the metal door and grabs Flint’s arm, dragging him with her back through the halls.
Flint stops her, “Wait there is a back exit this way, it’s where they brought me in,” Flint says, pointing down a hallway. The two turn and head for the back exit. They stop as they hear clanking and heavy footsteps.
“The guards must be looking for us,” Leona ever so quietly whispers in Flint’s ear.
They make their way to the back exit and escape, heading towards the alley at the docks.
