 Orange Smoke (Part 2)

“Sp-sp-spare me?” the woman shakily asks.

“Yesss,” replies the smoke, hissing the s like a snake, “I am going to kill ten people. If you set me free you will be spared, but if you walk away…you will be the first to go.”

The woman’s eyes go wide, “so you’re asking me to, to pick, if I’m one of the ten, or if, if another takes my place?” she stutters out.

“Exactly, much more fun than just…randomly killing, don’t you think?”

“I wouldn’t exactly call it fun.”

“Oh maybe not to you, but to me it is everything. When one holds the power to take a life whenever they please, there is no fun in it anymore. To find that,” the smoke inhales deeply, “pleasure, in the kill, there must be something more. To traumatize the mind, is absolutely exhilarating.”

The woman looks around, trying to see who was in sight and who the smoke might go for. All she could see on the street were two people casually walking, and three business owners tending their shops. Then she thinks the smoke may not care who is nearby and pick his victims at random. There was no way for her to know who the ten would be.

Terrified for her life she made her decision. “I will set you free,” she said, a tear slipping from her eye.

The smoke laughs an evil laugh, “Wise decision.”

“How do I do it?” the woman asks, failing to hold back her tears.

“Just take off the lid, and enjoy the show.”

With a shaky hand the woman reaches for the plastic top to the stone garbage. She raises it and drops it to the ground. The orange smoke shoots up and slowly heads into one of the shops.

The woman quickly turns around and walks away as fast as she can. Tears pour from her eyes as she hears the blood curdling screams from behind her. She doesn’t turn to look, she can't, she simply continues walking away.
