 Forgotten Memories (Part 12)

That night, Sarah had rushed back to the hospital to turn in the serum. Soon after the testing began. No one knew how long it would take to find a way to reverse the serum, let alone figure out how it took away memories in the first place.

In the waiting period Jeremy, with help from teachers, speech therapists, and his now girlfriend Sarah, Jeremy was able to relearn how to be a human being again, and recall a few lost memories here and there. He was not the person he used to be, but he was at least a functioning member of society. He was now becoming a new version of Jeremy, creating new memories.

They had not seen or heard from Raina, she had disappeared. They knew they could have gone after her, but the chances of finding her would be slim. They decided to leave it alone and just move on.

After two years, a countless number of tests, and many failed experiments, the scientists and doctors were confident they had created an antidote to the serum. Sarah drove to Jeremy’s house and picked him up to take him to the hospital.

They walked in together, hand in hand, “Are you ready for this?” she asks him.

“I don’t know,” he says, excited but also scared. He stops and turns to her, looking deep into her eyes, “I want you to know, if this works and I get my memories back, nothing has to change.”

“I know,” she says, smiling up at him. The couple share a kiss and continue to the front desk. After Jeremy is all checked into his room and clothed in hospital attire. Sarah joins him once again as they await the doctor’s arrival.

A few minutes later the doctor walked in announcing his presence, “Hello, I’m doctor Reed, and if everything goes well here Mr. Paine, you should be walking out of here with all your old memories fully intact.”

Jeremy’s visible nervousness caught Sarah’s attention, she walked over to his bedside and squeezed his hand. Jeremy looked to the doctor.

Jeremy takes a deep inhale, “Let’s hope so sir.”

“Now Jeremy I want to prepare you for what is about to happen. As you are aware, we

Cannot guarantee this is going to work. We have also made this antidote as safe as possible, but for it to do the things it needs to do there is some risk involved.”

“Just give it to me straight doctor…please.” Jeremy pleads.

“Mr. Paine, we have no idea what is going to happen,” doctor Reed says bluntly. “Do you still want to go through with the procedure?”

Jeremy looks at Sarah, she gives him a smile, “I am with you either way.”

“Let’s do it,” Jeremy says, trying his best to be brave.

Doctor Reed rolls a table over and preps a spot on Jeremy’s arm for a needle. He pulls out a syringe and gets ready to inject Jeremy with the antidote.

Before the doctor pokes him Jeremy quickly turns to Sarah, “I love you.”

“I love you too Jeremy,” she replies, holding back tears.
The doctor injects Jeremy with the antidote. At first nothing happens, Sarah and the doctor stare intently at Jeremy looking for any kind of reaction. Suddenly Jeremy falls backwards onto the bed, eyes shut and eyelids twitching, as if he was in a dream.

Millions of memories rush to Jeremy’s head, his friends, his family, his childhood, it was all there now. Growing up, school, adult life, everything. He quickly opened his eyes and sat up. His past life is remembered and the memories of the last two years are still intact.

“Did it work?” Sarah and the doctor ask in unison.

Jeremy smiles, “It worked.”
