The Beast Tamer
“Silence your beast or I will have him silence you!” the woman shouts at the man, holding a roaring beast.
The man pulls tight on the rope, sealing the beast's mouth shut. “Ha! Have him silence me? I promise I am much more fun than this old beast,” the man flirts with a cheeky smile.
The woman is not amused by his response. “What fool has such disregard, such lack of respect for his animal? This beast could tear you apart, limb by limb, and yet you joke, saying you are better than him?” the woman replies disgusted.
“If you haven’t noticed little lady, I’m the one holding him in restraints, not the other way around,” the man says, with self confidence the size of a mountain. “Who do you think is the better one now?”
“I would still choose the animal,” she replies bluntly, ripping his confidence apart like paper. “Now back to my question. My journey is long and my load is not light. A ways back my horse fell ill and I had to set him free. I am now in need of a new ride to carry me the rest of the way and was wondering if you would sell me your beast, as you clearly care so little for him.”
“No I don’t praise him as you seem to do, but that’s not why I caught him. This fellow is my prize and will surely sell for more than you can offer.”
“To whom will you be selling the beast?” the woman asks, with concern for the animal.
“There is a province not far from here, famed for their circus full of terrifying beasts. Their monster fights are such a show to watch, meaning they are in constant demand for new beasts.”
Enraged for what the man intended for the beast's future, she could not let it happen. “I cannot allow you to do that to this innocent animal.”
“Innocent,” that man laughs, “This beast is a machine of murder and would gladly have you and I for lunch if he could.”
“I know,” the woman quickly kicks the man in the gut, causing him to let go of the restraints. As the beast is freed he charges straight for the man and begins to feast. When he is done with the corpse, the beast turns to the woman, and stares.
The woman, with no fear, holds out a hand and slowly approaches the animal. It does not move, merely stands and observes the woman's movements. As she reaches the animal, she places a hand on its forehead and closes her eyes. Her hand begins to glow as she reaches into the beast’s mind, forging a deep bond with the animal. She opens her eyes and removes her hand, taking a deep breath.
“Hello there,” she says to the beast with a smile. The beast shows no sort of aggression to the woman. She packs her things onto the animal and climbs on, holding on to his thick brown fur. She resumes her journey with her new companion, leaving the man's torn body lying on the road.
