 Are You Dead?

“I’m not dead,” her roommate texts, as the night grows late.

“Ok, sounds good,” she responds. She continues on with her relaxing evening, but as the hours pass by she grows more worried for the safety of her roommate and friend. She knows that her friend is probably ok, and just hanging out with her family, but the worry still grows.

“Hey, are you still not dead?” She texts her roommate again. She receives no response. Again she thinks to herself, her friend is just talking with her parents, didn’t notice her phone, everything is probably fine. She debates going to bed, but not knowing if her friend is ok or not haunts her.

An hour passes and there is still no response for her roommate. It is midnight, a very late time for her roommate to arrive home. She considers texting again, desperately wanting to know if her friend was safe, but also not wanting to show her overreaction. She decides against sending another text.

The hours turn to days and the days into weeks. Her friend was not coming home. Even her parents didn’t know where she was. She was lost, somewhere out there, never to be found.
