 Midnight Drive

Frankie frantically pulls out her ringing phone, “Yeah?”

“I’m coming over.”

“Oh ugh…right now?”

“Yeah, we’re going on a drive.”

“Ok.”

The phone call ends. It was so late and Frankie was not expecting to go anywhere else tonight, but her brother apparently had other plans. She slipped on some slippers and a light jacket and waited for her brother to arrive.

About ten minutes later, Frankie hears a loud engine revving outside her window. She pulls back the curtain and sees her brother pulling into her driveway. He gets out of his car and walks up to the front door. Frankie opens it, letting her brother walk in the door.

“So where do you want to go?” he asks.

Frankie, being very tired and still caught off guard by the suddenness of his visit, was not sure where she wanted to go, not even aware twenty minutes ago that she was going anywhere.

“I don’t know,” she replies honestly.

“Alright, well I was thinking we could just start driving around town, probably get lost somewhere, maybe die,” he adds jokingly at the end.

Frankie laughs, “That sounds good.”

The two head to her brother's car and get in. The loud engine roars once again and they take off. They put on some music and sit in silence. There is no conversation, the siblings are just happy to be spending time together. It is so rare for them nowadays, so any moments they share are precious to them.

Along the drive they pick a road and keep heading straight until they can’t anymore. They make the decision to just keep taking left turns and see where it takes them. After the fourth left turn on the back country roads, the siblings are excited when they see the freeway, now knowing where they are and having no idea how they got there. They take the freeway and return home, still in silence, with chill music playing throughout the small car.

Arriving safely at Frankie’s house, the two get out of the car.

“I love you.”

“Love you two,” Frankie says as she hugs her brother. She watches as he climbs back in

his car. As she walks up to her door, the loud engine starts up again and her brother drives off, leaving Frankie satisfied and ready to go to sleep.
