 The Tree Beast

Three friends lie on the hillside late at night, gazing at the stars above, hoping to see one fly brightly across the peaceful night sky. As they lie in the damp grass, they begin to hear strange noises coming from the large apple tree to their right. They quickly ignore it, writing it off as just apples falling to the ground, hitting branches on their journey down. Little do they know, they should be much more fearful than they currently are. 

The apple tree to their right is no normal tree, but a vicious beast. The tree is very protective of its fruit. Earlier in the day a family of deer had stopped by, eating the apples off the tree. This enraged the tree monster, but unlike the friends, the deer got away at the first signs of movement.

The tree senses the friend's presence and readies its attack. The noises the friends had been hearing were not apples falling, but the old tree limbs slowly moving into position. Like a predator stalking its prey, the tree waits for a perfect moment. It has not moved in a while and the friends have lost all interest in the tree, their focus drawn to the stars.

A giant meteor flies across the sky, putting the friends into a state of awe, all of them gasping at the beautiful light. Now was the tree’s moment. It lunged towards the friends, branches shaking and leaves falling, the very roots of the tree lifting up out of the ground allowing the tree monster to move where it pleased.  

The friends tried to run away but they were too late, the tree had a tight hold of them, its roots wrapped around them, holding their arms flush against their sides. The roots retracted back to the tree, pulling the three friends with it. They wiggled as best they could but it was no use, the tree’s grasp was too tight. 

As the tree replanted itself in the ground, the three friends were painfully pulled underground, their bodies forcefully buried and then eventually crushed by the weight of the apple tree. The friends did not deserve they fate, they had done nothing to the tree, they were simply caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and became victims of the tree beasts wrath.

4/24/22 Carried by the Breeze

  Carried by the Breeze She stood in the breeze, arms stretched out wide. “Take me away,” she said, and the wind complied with her request. It picked her up off the earth and carried her through the sky and clouds.  Although a wondrous view passed by below her, she just closed her eyes and floated with the wind. The sight could be replicated but this feeling would never be again. She did nothing but float, feeling the breeze run through her hair, trying to capture it in her hands. Hours went by and she enjoyed every moment, but the chill of the sky began to wear into her, she was ready to go down. The wind however had different plans, it was not ready to let her go.
