8/8/22 Blue Finger
Blue Finger
“Hey blue finger!” someone calls out.
“Here we go again,” he whispers to himself, “Yeah?”
“Why’s your finger blue?” he says, not really asking, just looking for a reaction.
He lets out a depressed sigh, “I don’t know Kevin,” he responds with no emotion in his voice. Kevin laughs and walks off. After hearing the same question, every day, all the time, from everyone he knew, it grew so old so fast. Everyone seemed to find it so funny to ask. He used to try and wear gloves, but people would still make fun, “Covering up that blue finger of yours?” they would joke, but he never laughed.
Walking down the street a group of teens spotted him, “Hey look, it’s blue finger!” they rush over and crowd him, “Let us see it! Let us see it!” they demand.
He could just run away, but he knew they would follow him. He holds up his right pointer finger to reveal the deep blue spot covering his finger print. “Happy now?” he says annoyed, and just wanting to be left alone. The kids laugh and walk away.
His finger had been blue like that from birth. No doctor could explain it, and the only way to get rid of it would be to chop the finger off. In times like these he considered it, just taking a large knife and chopping it off. But what would change? Instead of making fun of his weird blue spot, they would see him as the crazy guy that chopped his own finger off.
‘Would it be worth it though?’ he thinks to himself. He enters his apartment and goes to his kitchen. Grabbing the biggest knife he owns, he places his hand on the table and holds the knife above the blue spotted finger. His left hand begins to shake as a war goes on in his mind.
“DO IT!” “NO DON’T, IT WILL HURT” the thoughts fly through his head. “NO ONE WILL CALL YOU BLUE FINGER ANYMORE.”
With a shaky breath he drops the knife, it clatters on the floor. He sits down on the kitchen floor hiding his face in his palms, “What am I doing?” he asks himself out loud. He goes to bed, mentally preparing himself for tomorrow, as he has to do every single day of his life.
The End
