 Longing for Freedom (Part 1)

In the cold snowy mountains of the east, Jorn sleeps in his tent next to all the other slaves held captive in the camp. Reman is as cold as the snow itself, running a tight labor camp of captured men. Tall wooden walls guarded by Reman’s men keeping the slaves from escaping. No one has ever made it out, and according to Reman, no one ever will.

The morning light shines through the thin tent and all the men wake in a hurry, scrambling outside into an orderly line. Guards supervise all the slaves as they come, making sure they are neatly lined up to receive their daily tasks.

Reman emerges from his cabin, a stern look on his face. He eyes down all the slaves, looking for any flaws in their behavior that he can beat out of them later. All the men stand, emotionless, trying not to stand out.

Reman begins telling the slaves their jobs for the day and his high expectations of them and the consequences that will come if they aren’t met. Before everyone is dismissed Reman calls, “Jorn!” Jorn quickly walks over to Reman and silently bows his head, acknowledging his summons. “You are coming with me today.” Jorn silently nods his head in understanding. “DISMISSED!” Reman yells as all the slaves rush to their various work areas.

Reman turns to Jorn and pulls out a pair of thick metal handcuffs and bolts them around Jorn’s wrists. Then he grabs the chain attached to the cuffs and clips it on to his own belt, “Keep up,” he orders Jorn.

Jorn follows along, occasionally being dragged by Reman who would purposely quicken his pace. As they reached the large wooden gate of the camp, a horse and cart were already waiting for them. Attached to the back of the cart is a cage on wheels. Reman opens the cage, unhooks Jorn from himself, then tosses him into the cage, locking the door behind him. Reman hops into the passenger side of the cart, next to a guard who has the reins.

“Where to?” the guard asks.

“Nuro, it’s collection day,” Reman says with a devious smile.
