Longing for Freedom (Part 2)
Every bump on the road to Nuro hurt more than the last as Jorn sat in the cage. The hard wood floor and metal bars gave him no comfort or rest for his already tired body. Sleeping on almost nothing, directly on the ground every single night left his body in a constantly sore state. Adding his daily slave labor on top of that only deteriorated him more.
Jorn is happy for the rest from a long day of work, but wishes he had some sort of padding below him, or that the road would be smoothe. The journey to Nuro was only a few hours long, but felt so much longer in the cage.
The carriage approaches large stone walls surrounding the busy city of Nuro. The driver pulls up to an entrance and a guard lowers the gate, allowing the cart to enter. So many people stare as the carriage goes through the streets. Not at the carriage itself, the horses or driver, but at Jorn, locked in the back like an animal.
Suddenly the carriage comes to a stop as the driver pulls on the reins. The driver ties up the horses as Reman gets down, walking around to the back to open Jorn’s cage. Jorn knows there is a moment where the cage will be open and him unbound, but he knows escape would never work. Reman would catch him in a second and punish him severely.
Reman opens the cage door and Jorn sticks out his hands for the cuffs. Jorn is once again attached to Reman and dragged around wherever Reman goes. “Wait here, we will be back soon,” Reman says to the driver.
As Jorn is dragged through the streets, the people of Nuro look at him, some with disgusted faces, others with sympathy in their eyes. Others glance at him, then quickly look away, trying to pretend he isn’t there.
Reman stops at a smaller gate as he approaches the Baron of Nuro’s home; a large stone mansion carved into the back wall. “I’m here to see the Baron,” Reman says to the guard standing watch at the gate.
