1/1/22 The Hunter and the Deer

The Hunter and the Deer

In a vast forest, leaves crinkle underfoot as a deer shakily stands itself up. The animal looks around, taking in his surroundings, as if he had never seen them before. Following his instinct, he begins walking through the forest, his mighty antlers brushing against the low branches. With a dull look in his eye he trudges along, not sure where to go or what to do. The deer freezes in place as he hears a snapping twig. His head bolts around and spots a hunter creeping up on him slowly.

The hunter stops his slow approach as he realizes he has been spotted by the deer. Slowly he reaches back into his quiver and pulls out an arrow; the deer cautiously watches his every move. The hunter begins to draw back his arrow, aiming directly at the deer. The wide eyed deer sees what is about to happen and dashes off into the forest. Swiftly and precisely the hunter shoots his arrow before the deer gets out of range. Pleased with the hit, the hunter slowly begins approaching his prize.

Struck, the deer falls to the ground and cries out in agony; the pain penetrating his back leg was like nothing he had ever felt before. Clinging to the will to live, the deer tries to stand, limping heavily as he attempts once again to run away from the hunter.

Seeing the deer's attempt to escape, the hunter quickens his pace. A few feet away from his prey, he pulls out a knife strapped to his right leg. The hunter goes to the deer and grabs hold of an antler. The creature looks up at the man staring straight into his soul. The hunter is startled, frozen in fear at the animal's intense stare. He quickly shakes his head and ignores the look. With a terrifying rage, he quickly plunges the sharp hunting knife into the deer's side, piercing it directly in the heart.

The hunter stands still, the knife held tight in his grasp. Watching the life fade away from the animal the hunter begins to realize what he has done. He breathes deeply, filled with remorse and terrified at what he has become. The hunter swiftly pulls his knife out of the deer and stumbles backwards, nearly tripping over his own boot. He stares at the lifeless animal in front of him, pitying the poor creature.

The deer’s eyes begin to glow, as a ghostly whitish blue mist escapes from the animal’s mouth and nose. The hunter stares, bewildered at the strange mist. It floats around forming a wispy ball of light. Although without form, the hunter could sense the anger emanating from the mist. Like the deer before, the hunter's eyes open wide with fear. In an instant the ball flies towards the hunter, covering him in the mist. The hunter screams, his body feels like it’s on fire; then nothingness, as if his body wasn’t even there. The world goes black in the eyes of the hunter, as he passes out in the mist.

Laying on the forest floor, the hunter groggily opens his eyes. He looks around, and quickly notices the deer’s body has disappeared. As he tries to stand on his legs, the weight of his body pulls him down to all fours. The hunter looks to where his hands should be, but in their place are shiny black hooves. All of a sudden, the hunter feels the weight of two large antlers atop his head. He adjusts his neck to compensate for the new weight. He looks behind him at his body; he is the deer now.

Unsure of what to do, the hunter shakily tries to walk away, stumbling on the unstable ground. Just as he is figuring out how to maneuver his new body, he hears the rustling of leaves coming from behind him. His heart races as he turns to the noise. Not far behind him a hunter stands, slowly drawing back his arrow.
