3/7/22 The Rusty Tower

 The Rusty Tower

“Woah look how huge that is,” Erica says, looking up at the huge structure in front of them, looking up, it seemed like it touched the sky and continued onward. “That must have taken forever to build.”

“Yeah…but now it looks kind of cruddy, covered in rust and all that,” replied Makenzie.

“Well yeah, but it must have been so amazing when it was brand new. We should go look inside,” Erica suggested excitedly, practically dragging Makenzie into the old dark tower.

Makenzie was immediately filled with anxiety and a horrible feeling about going inside, “We don’t know what the heck is in there, are we even allowed to go inside?”

“Come on Mak, like you said it’s old and rusty. No one cares about this place anymore. Let’s go see what an old run down building on the edge of town looks like,” Erica says, trying to reassure her best friend.

“Alright,” Makenzie hesitantly agrees, “But if we die in there, I’m blaming you.”

Erica’s excitement drops for a moment before the raging curiosity returns, driving away the fear. “We aren’t gonna die in there, if anything looks too bad we will run our butts out of there as fast as we can, alright?”

Makenzie lets out a deep sigh, “Alright.”

The two girls carefully enter the giant rust covered tower, through broken glass doors in the front. Pulling out their phones, they turn on their flashlights revealing an empty abandoned lobby, with a large dried up stone fountain filling the center of the space. Cobwebs hang in every corner and on every wall.  A few sturdy wooden desks lie around, worn down by water and moss. Decoratively placed are plant pots, full of nothing but dirt, their former plants having long rotted away.

The room may not be much, but the indication of previous life filling the room could be seen all over. Old telephones strewn about, metal chairs set at tables. The girls began to picture the room in their heads, not as it is now but full of people, full of life.

“So where next?” Makenzie asked, now a little more excited about exploring the tower.

Erica looks around and sees an elevator. She begins to walk towards it and Makenzie follows behind her. Erica pushes a button, attempting to summon the elevator, but it does not work. “Had to try,” Erica says, knowing it probably wouldn’t work.

“Maybe there is a staircase somewhere around here,” Makenzie suggests. The two girls look around and see a door that looks to be the entrance to the stairs. Upon trying to open the door the girls find it is locked, and impossible for them to open on their own.

Erica looks down in defeat, sad that they could not explore the tower further. Makenzie puts a comforting hand on her back, “Hey at least we made it inside, and I mean this room is pretty cool don’t you think?”

A small smile spreads across Erica’s face, “Yeah… I guess it’s pretty cool in here.”

An idea pops into Makenzie’s head that she knows will make her friend feel even better, “You know, if you were to find another abandoned building like this, I wouldn’t mind exploring it with you. Just find one we can actually climb up next time alright?” Makenzie says jokingly.

Erica smiles, “I’ll try my best.” She pauses, “Thanks Makenzie.” The two girls walk out of the rusty tower, slightly disappointed but excited to look for more places to explore.
