4/1/22 Keeper of the Island
Keeper of the Island
Rowing as hard as you can, you finally reach the mysterious island in the middle of the large lake. As far as you know no one has ever set foot on the island. Your excitement grows, as you leave your little canoe, ready to set foot on ground, untouched by human-kind.
Tall evergreen trees grow on the island, creating a miniature forest on the island. The combination of woods completely surrounded by water on such a small mass of land feels wrong but magical at the same time.
As you walk deeper into the forest the colors become more vibrant. The green richens and little flowers on bushes pop out at you. Even the ground goes from plain dirt, to vibrant patterns of grass blades.
You reach the center of the island which holds a solid circular patch of the brightest green grass. In the center of the island sits a woman. You are surprised by her presence, with the rest of the island showing no other signs a person has been there.
The woman sits, clothed in plants decorated with small flowers. Atop her thick curly golden brown hair sits a crown of leaves, similarly decorated with little pink and purple flowers. Small crystals rest across her forehead and down her cheeks, like little stars laid down and made a home on her skin.
Her eyes were shut but as she sensed your presence she turned to look at you. Her eyes were like gold, and shone so bright; You lost your breath at the sight.
“Greetings traveler, I am Keyai, keeper of this island. What brings you to my land?”
You grow nervous as you realize you are intruding, “Oh um, I have just seen this island out here and was curious what was on it. If you want me to leave I will, I didn’t know anyone was here,” you sputter out rapidly.
“I think that would be best. Wherever you humans touch, destruction comes. I will not allow my island to fall prey to your curse,” her eyes grow brighter for just a second, which you assume is meant to be threatening.
Not wanting to upset this woman, or whatever she is, you make up your mind and decide it is time to leave. “I’m sorry Keyai, I will leave your island and never come back.” Keyai only nods in response as she carefully watches your every move. You quickly turn around and do not run but start walking back to your canoe.
The island was not what you expected it to be, but what you witnessed today you will never forget. Out of respect for Keyai and for the safety of those around you, you don’t tell anyone about your adventure to the island. If they wish to anger Keyai, they will have to do so of their own will.
The End
