 Stargazing

Have you ever really looked at the stars? Yes they are shiny and fill the night sky. Yes there are certain constellations that make pretty patterns that look nothing like the thing they are supposed to represent. But that’s not what I’m talking about.

Have you ever laid down outside on a starry night and picked one star in the sky to look at? Have you let your eyes focus on that single star until all the others have disappeared, until it is now just you and that star and nothing else around you matters?

While concentrating on the star, have you let your eyes go in and out of focus, watching the light go from a small condensed ball, to shooting out in bright spikes? It is like the star becomes more like the shape we draw on paper.

Then from that star have you ever tried to create constellations of your own? Do you look for other particularly bright stars and think, what animal could this be? Or maybe it’s not an animal, maybe it is a person or an object. If not those then maybe it is a shape without a name, with straight and curvy lines, connecting the stars to form something pleasing to your eyes.

We have been so disciplined on how to look at the stars that we forget to admire their true beauty. All these tiny suns fill our sky and all we do is try and find specific ones that form a vague pattern.

Next time you go stargazing, forget everything you know about the stars. Just look, dream, enjoy, relax, find how they are beautiful to you. Maybe it is in the patterns and shapes they make, or maybe the collection of randomly placed lights in the sky satisfies your brain. Whatever it is, make it your own, and enjoy the beautiful balls of light that fill our sky night after night.

The End
