 Lemonade

As you are walking down the street on a hot summer’s day, you spot a small lemonade stand, run by a young boy wearing large black sunglasses. Wanting to bring a smile to the boy’s face, you walk over to the lemonade stand.

“Hello, how much for a cup of lemonade?” You ask politely.

“Five dollars,” the kid says in the deepest voice he can manage.

A look of shock waves over your face, “Wow, that’s a little pricey for a cup of lemonade.”

“Listen here lady, let me tell you about this lemonade.” The maturity of his voice and attitude towards you shocks you even more than the price. “I made this lemonade alright, you wanna know how?” You somehow manage to shake your head slightly up and down. “I took this pitcher here and filled it with water,” he says, grasping the clear plastic handle. “Then I added a good amount of lemon juice. After that I added the good stuff, the sweets…the sugar.” You hold in your laugh, not wanting to offend this young businessman’s speech. “Now you see, the sugar only mixes in for a little bit, enough time to drink it, but that last sip, oh that last sip,” he closes his eyes thinking about the taste, “Pure sugar water with a hint of lemon. A perfect drink for a hot summer day. So, ma’am, would you like a glass, or not?” he says, heavily popping the t.

You are thoroughly impressed by his pitch. The price per cup was about to turn you away, but after a speech like that, from a child who is maybe six years old, there was no way you could refuse him. “Yes, I will take one glass of lemonade,” you say to him as you search for a five dollar bill.

The young boy hands you the little plastic cup filled with this, supposedly amazing, lemonade. You hand the boy his money and take a sip. It may not be all it was cracked up to be, but you did have to admit, “That was some pretty good lemonade,” you say to the boy.

A smile ignites on his face. “Thank you, please come again,” he says in the sweetest, most high pitched voice. You smile as you continue to walk down the street.
