Survival
*BANG* Another victim down, their life gone so she could live on. She didn’t like living this way, crawling around the streets, robbing people to survive, killing them when necessary.
Her life wasn’t always like this. She used to be a normal, average citizen of society. She lived in a little apartment in the city, worked an office job 9-5, not many friends, not real close with any of them, but enough to not be lonely.
One day, her nice, calm little life all changed. For seemingly no reason, she was let go from her job, just like that, with no warning whatsoever. A few months later, and no new jobs would take her. Stained by the unfair reputation of her previous employer, she was not able to find a job.
Her money quickly dwindled, and when rent came due and she couldn’t pay, she was kicked to the streets with nowhere to go. She asked her “friends” but no one would take her. She was scared and alone, like an abandoned child on the streets. She had never experienced this before, didn’t know what to do, how to survive.
Thankfully previous actions of hers were now coming back to help her. Everyday on her walk to work, she would see a homeless man sitting in the same alley, asking for whatever anyone had to offer. Whenever she could she would drop him a few dollars, or bring him some food. He was very grateful as she was one of the only people who ever paid him any thought.
Wandering the streets, tears streaming down her face, the homeless man ran into her. He took her under his wing, showing her how the world of the streets functions. He warned her that he was not a very good person, but he did what he needed to survive.
It was not all fun and games, everyday was a struggle. Being homeless in a bad city changed her, toughened her up. She could not appear helpless or she’d be eaten alive, with no one to help her except for her one homeless friend. She was a new person now, accustomed to committing crimes on the daily.
She had not taken many lives before this one. The first time she ever murdered someone, shocked her badly, but she forced herself to get through it. Her heart still races every time she is forced to take a life. She tries not to, but sometimes, it just has to happen.
Sometimes she thinks about returning to a normal life, getting one good haul and then running away to start a new life. She can barely remember what her old life was like, she doesn’t know if normal life would suit her anymore. She has grown so used to life on the streets, a part of her doesn’t want to leave.
She knows however, that the moment she was in an actual home, all those thoughts would go away and she would relish in the comforts of the inside world. But today was not that day. Today, right now, she stands in front of a dead body, lying on the cold concrete of the alleyway. She quickly grabs what she can off the man and runs away. As the sirens pull up to investigate the gunfire, she is long gone.
The End
