Coma (Part 2)
The fox ignores her greeting and turns, walking away from her down the forest path. It keeps a slow enough pace where the woman can follow it without too much struggle, but still fast enough to be making progress, ‘but to where,’ the woman wonders.
The path never seemed to change, the trees on each side would repeat themselves every so often. She felt stuck in this loop of following the fox down an eternal path. “Where are we going?” she asked the fox, annoyed, hoping for some sort of answer. The fox however was undisturbed, and kept its steady pace.
Frustrated, the woman purposely quickened her steps and caught up to the fox. She bent down and grabbed under its belly, lifting it into her arms. As soon as her grip was settled around the fox, it disappeared in her arms. She was confused for a moment until she looked ahead and saw the fox again, walking down the path like nothing had happened. She tried a few more times to grab the fox but the same thing happened every time.
Giving up with this plan, she went back to just following the fox, hoping it would eventually lead her somewhere, that something would be at the end of this path. She could feel her eyes droop, growing bored by the monotonous journey.
After what felt like hours though, something changed. Under her feet the ground rumbled, kicking up tiny pebbles and specks of dirt. The fox stopped, seemingly startled by the shaking. The woman followed suit and held still.
A strange shadow began to enter the path, just a straight line that grew larger very quickly. The woman looked up to see a tree about to crush her. She jumped out of the way narrowly avoiding the tree. The fox looked at her, seeing she was still alive. Her eyes locked with the fox and they both had the same thought…run.
The two ran down the path that was increasingly becoming more dangerous. Trees were falling more frequently, it became a dodging game. As they continued on, the woman noticed the ground felt softer, then puddles started to appear on the path. Her foot got caught in one such puddle and sank very fast. She struggled to get out, barely missing another tree that had taken advantage of her situation.
“Oh what I’d give to go back to there being nothing on this path,” she nervously said out loud.
