Tearfall (Part 4)
A team of nurses bring her inside an isolated room. Towels are being switched out almost constantly so the room doesn’t flood. She is hooked up to machines that are carefully covered in plastic, protecting them from the water.
After a few hours of the flood coming from her eyes, her tongue is like a desert, her mind is foggy, she is barely staying awake, falling in and out of sleep, water still pouring from her eyes even when they are shut.
In her half awake state she turns to one of the nurses, “You know, I never knew I could love and hate water this much,” she says, slurring her words, “If I make it through this, I feel the need to drink so much water, but also I never want to see it again in my life.” The nurse chuckles a little as they grab the towels and replace them with new dry ones.
Doctor Liken walks in the room, “According to our monitors, your body has almost completely run out of water.”
“Hah, tell that to my eyes,” she says pointing to the everflowing stream of water gushing from her eyes.
“Trust me, if I could make them stop I would. Anyway, it’s just a waiting game now but theoretically they should stop soon.”
“That would be nice,” she says as she unknowingly drifts back into sleep.
“COME ON, COME ON! BREATHE!” she hears Doctor Liken yell.
WIth a large gasp she sits up, filling her lungs with air. “What happened?!” she asks, her heart racing with adrenaline. She looks to see everyone's faces be coated with relief.
“Well…” Doctor Liken pauses, “You died, and it wasn’t looking good for a moment. But here you are, and…”
She takes a moment, wondering what he’s going to say next, but then realizes…”MY EYES AREN’T WATERING!” she screams with excitement. The room fills with joyful laughter.
The laughing breaks as the door opens and her boyfriend walks in the door, “Hey, you alright?” he asks, with almost no emotion.
“No thanks to you,” she says sternly. Doctor Liken and the nurses sense the immediate tension in the room and quietly escort themselves out.
“What are you talking about?” he asks, annoyed.
Her jaw drops, “Are you serious, you did absolutely nothing to help me in this situation!”
“What was I supposed to do? I’m not a doctor! And hey, I got you to the hospital didn’t I!”
“You called 911 after refusing to take me in your car cause you didn’t want your seats to get wet! Then, once we were here, all you did was tell bad jokes that did not help at all instead of providing legitimate emotional support which I very much needed!” He stays silent. “I just died and came back and I did not go through all that just to come back and spend my time with you.”
“What are you saying,” he asks with a hint of sadness.
“Goodbye, we are done.” Once again he says nothing and just quietly walks away. She leans back in her bed, feeling so relieved, she was alive and now free of a toxic part of her life.
Seeing the coast was clear, Doctor Liken walks back in the room, and very professionally ignores everything that just happens. “So we will be keeping you here for a little while to monitor you and make sure the water doesn’t start pouring out of your eyes again. Is there anything we can get you to make you more comfortable for the time being?”
“For right now? Just a nap,” she says, fully laying down and shutting her eyes, drifting off into a nice, relaxing sleep.
